We’re Dedicated to Carbon Neutrality
At Moonshot, we do not use the phrase climate-friendly lightly. We believe that in order to be a truly climate-friendly brand, we need to guarantee that our company’s existence has a net positive impact on humans and our planet. It’s easy to talk the talk, but for us, climate-friendly eating is more than an idea: it’s our reason for being
As a brand dedicated to a brighter future for the planet, we wanted to share how we’re continually working to maintain climate neutrality, so you know exactly what you’re getting with us.
How we approach climate-friendliness:
We track the greenhouse gas and other climate impacts associated with Moonshot’s operations. This way, we know what our impact is and what actions will make the most impact.
We sequester greenhouse gases within our own supply chain by working with regenerative farmers to capture carbon in plants and soil.
We reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from our materials and operations.
We offset all of our remaining greenhouse gas emissions. Not only that, because tracking greenhouse gases sometimes relies on estimates, we purchase more offsets than our estimated emissions, to ensure we go beyond being carbon neutral to having a positive impact on the climate!
When we say ALL of our company’s impact, we mean ALL. We measure, track, sequester, reduce, and offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout our entire company: from internal activities like shipping, manufacturing, and employee activity, to emissions from our suppliers and the impact created by our customers receiving and enjoying our delicious snacks! (For those of you familiar with the lingo, this means we track scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions).
As a company, we track the emissions associated with our operations from day 1.
By doing so, we can estimate our company’s carbon footprint, identify opportunities to sequester and reduce emissions, and purchase verified carbon offsets to neutralize our activities. Our goal is to sequester carbon and reduce impact first, and then offset. We’re committed to being climate-friendly and are always working to do better.
What is a carbon offset? Glad you asked!
Carbon offsets are investment projects that either avoid carbon from being emitted, like renewable energy, or remove carbon from the atmosphere, like planting forests. High quality offsets create both environmental and social benefits that balance out the GHG emissions that we cannot avoid.
We try to be as accurate as we can be in our GHG emission estimation, but we recognize that it’s impossible to capture every nuance. To solve for this uncertainty, we will always offset more than our actual estimated impact. We’ve always loved extra credit!
At Moonshot, we believe that this investment to ensure true climate-friendliness and to support the global movement to reverse climate change is worth it. We believe that this should be a standard cost of doing business in the 21st century, since it’s typically <1% of a brand’s revenue to offset their carbon emissions!
The GHG accounting process is pretty complex, so we are leaning on some key partners in order to make sure we do it well. Here’s a quick breakdown:
In summer 2020, we conducted a pre-launch life cycle assessment (LCA) on our Sourdough Sea Salt cracker to get a deeper understanding of our supply chain and emissions hot spots.
NativeEnergy is helping us to estimate and offset our emissions from day 1 of our operations in summer 2019 up until our launch in November 2020. Founded in 2001, they have guided many leading brands through this process. As our business grows and evolves, their Help Build™ program will allow us to play a direct role in funding new projects that support safe water, clean air, ecosystem restoration, soil health, smallholder farmer development, wildlife and habitat protection, carbon sequestration, and more. Stay tuned for more details on the projects that we are investing in.
We’re working with Climate Neutral, an independent non-profit organization, to measure and offset our entire 2020 carbon emissions, and implement plans to reduce emissions moving forward. Once we’ve completed our certification next spring, you’ll start seeing the Climate Neutral Certified label on our products.
As part of our commitment to being climate-friendly, we also participate in key industry groups like The Climate Collaborative, Sustainable Food Trade Association (SFTA), and the Organic Trade Association. These groups connect us with other food and natural product brands. Together, we are innovating in the sustainability space in everything from carbon neutrality to compostable packaging.
Here at Moonshot, we are committed to being climate-friendly and radically transparent about our journey. If you have any questions about our climate-friendly practices and carbon offsets, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d love to hear from you. And make sure to follow us on Instagram to learn more about our efforts to improve!
