If you haven’t noticed, we love climate-friendly foods. But we also believe that packaging should be just as good for the planet. That’s why we’re making a public commitment, to us and to you, to have climate-friendly packaging on all our products. For our crackers, our gold standard is paper that is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable, and an interior bag that is 100% home-compostable. We’re still researching, experimenting, and working towards our 100% home-compostable plastic goal, and we want you to know that we’ll continually do the work to achieve that goal (hopefully in the near future!).
Our commitment to compostable packaging is just another aspect of our dedication to climate friendliness. Why do we care so much about compostable packaging? It’s an important part of our collective action against climate change. Here’s how:
The Truth about Petroleum-Based Plastic
Petroleum-based plastic packaging is everywhere. Sadly, most of it is not recycled and lasts forever in our environment. Right now, the cost and petroleum use of collecting and recycling plastics can far exceed the cost of using virgin plastic. Unfavorable economics means that only 8% of plastic waste is recycled in the US!
The economics could improve if we increase the demand for recycled plastic and with better sorting technology, but ultimately, plastics will always require extracting millenia-old carbon out of the ground (oil) because it degrades as you use it. We believe it would be much better to make our packaging out of carbon that’s already above ground and make it compostable, so we can put it back in the ground again after use.
The Future and Challenges of Compostable Packaging
Compostable packaging completely breaks down into its fundamental elements. Can you imagine a world where all of our packaging contributes to restoring the soil rather than pulling more carbon out of the earth? We can! And we believe in playing our part to help bring this future to life.
Over the past two years, we’ve learned a lot about compostable food packaging and the challenges of using it. Here’s a little peek at our recent insights
Challenge #1: It’s a very difficult technical problem. It needs to protect food for months and then decompose like food when we want it to. Not an easy task, but definitely doable!
Challenge #2: Compostable packaging is a new innovation with limited uses today - there are commercial compostable packaging options, but only for certain types of food. Different types of food need different types of protection from air and humidity.
Challenge #3: Petroleum-based plastics are efficiently and cost-effectively produced at huge scale. It’s even possible for petroleum-based plastics to have a lower carbon footprint than compostable plastics because of those efficiencies.
As more people develop and use compostable plastics, we can produce them at scale and become more carbon and cost-efficient over time. Moonshot is making a commitment to use compostable packaging because it’s an important part of supporting the climate-friendly food movement.
Our Compostable Packaging Journey
As part of our mission to make climate-friendly snacks, we need packaging to keep our crazy delicious crackers fresh for you, prevent food waste, and make a positive contribution to the soil. To fulfill this mission, we’ve searched everywhere for compostable films for Moonshot’s crackers.
Good news: We found some that have potential and have started testing them!
Not-so-good news: Getting the film to work on our manufacturing machinery, testing the film to ensure that it fully protects our crackers, and having enough scale as a brand to afford this premium-priced packaging will take time.
Right now, we’re using petroleum-based plastic film for our interior bag as we work on solving these challenges. You can recycle this film anywhere you can recycle plastic grocery bags (typically in-store, not curbside).
Join us in the Climate-Friendly Food Movement!
As a consumer, your demand for climate-friendly packaging drives innovative research and new technologies to increase the functionality of compostable packaging and decrease its cost. We’ve heard from you that you care about the packaging your food comes in, and we hear you. We care, too!
Moonshot is committed to producing tasty crackers that are also good for the environment. To us, that means from the first seed that enters the ground to the last cracker in the box - and even to the empty packaging – we are thinking: “How can we do good?” We will fulfill our promise to use home-compostable packaging once we are able. And pledge to keep you updated along the way!
Please join us in raising our collective voices in the marketplace and supporting climate-friendly activities throughout the entire food chain - from farmers revitalizing soils to packaging that disappears without a trace! Together, we can take a bite out of climate change!
