Our founder, Julia Collins, created the brand with the mission of making food a part of the climate solution. And as the first climate-friendly snack brand, carbon neutrality has been our standard since day one - at both the individual product level and companywide.
Today, we’re excited to take it one step further, and announce the addition of the Planet FWD carbon neutral seal on the front of every box!
Using Planet FWD’s software, we’ve measured, reduced, and offset our emissions from cradle-to-grave - meaning we track everything from when, how, and where our ingredients are grown through to the end of each box’s life, taking into account recycling and landfill.
Planet FWD (Moonshot’s sister company) was born out of Moonshot’s own journey to carbon neutrality, and today, the Planet FWD platform is helping other consumer brands understand their carbon footprint and takes steps to reduce emission as well.
You might be asking what our carbon footprint even is right about now... Each box of Moonshot is 0.32 kg CO2e, which might not mean much to you, so let's break it down.
This pie chart carves out the impact that every step of the creation and consumption of our crackers has. Compared to the industry standard, our GHG emissions are 29% lower per box!
For most food brands, ingredients contribute the most to their carbon footprint, but you’ll notice that our ingredients aren’t the largest contributor. That’s because our regeneratively grown wheat has actually about 50% lower emissions than conventional wheat - giving us a head start on reducing our footprint. (Read more on our 2021 impact here)
Carbon Neutral Certification
While all carbon neutral certifications benefit our environment, Moonshot’s sister company Planet FWD, was our choice because of the level of accuracy and transparency their platform provides. Additionally, the Planet FWD team helps brands source high-quality offsets to ensure carbon is not only being captured but permanently removed from the atmosphere.
Planet FWD is also committed to supporting brands on the path to making emissions reductions so that over time fewer offsets are needed, and brands are driving meaningful change to eliminate emissions from the creation of their products. At Moonshot, we understand that reductions are the most impactful step we as brands can take to work towards net zero emissions.
